Breakfast runs from 8:30 to 11:30am, every day

The kitchen opens at 8:30 in the morning, seven days a week, and breakfast is served until 11:30. That’s early enough that the light is still low across the fairways and the water is sitting flat, and late enough that nobody has to set an alarm to get here.

The same hours run every day. Saturday works like Tuesday. If you walk in at 11:20 you can still order a bacon and egg roll.

At 11:30 the kitchen moves across to bar snacks, light meals and lunch, and keeps going until it closes at 2pm. Coffee and cake are on the whole time.

What’s on the breakfast menu

The breakfast list is short, and that’s on purpose. Everything is made to order. It’s the food you actually want in the morning rather than a menu trying to do everything at once.

• Bacon and egg roll, $9.50. On a soft roll, made to order.
• Scrambled eggs and bacon, $19.50. With toast.
• Ham, cheese and tomato toastie, $10.50. Toasted, cut and served hot.
• Ham and cheese croissant, $10.50. Warmed through.
• BLT sandwich, $14.50. With aioli.
• Toasted banana bread, $7.50. Thick cut, toasted, with butter.
• Raisin toast, $6. Two thick slices, with butter.

There are two sides if you’re making a proper morning of it. A hashbrown is $3.50 and avocado is $4.

So a simple breakfast for two with coffee sits at the lower end of that list rather than the top. The prices above were correct when the menu was last checked, and the menu page always carries the current list.

You don’t need to be a member

This is the thing most people get wrong about the place, so it’s worth saying plainly. The café is open to the public. You don’t need to be a golf club member, you don’t need to play golf, and you don’t need to know anybody.

The café sits inside the clubhouse at Harrington Waters Golf Club, but it’s its own business, run by Ann & Elizabeth. Anyone can walk up the drive, park, come in and order.

There’s nothing to book for breakfast either. Order at the bar, pick a table and stay as long as you like. Nobody is going to move you on.

The deck is the seat worth having

The clubhouse was built to look outward, and the deck is where that pays off. It sits up above the fairways and the waterways, with a long horizon behind them. On a still morning the whole valley seems to be holding its breath.

If the weather isn’t playing along, the inside is fully air conditioned and the view through the glass is very nearly as good. People tend to sit outside anyway.

Bringing the dog

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating on the deck, and there are fresh water bowls out there for them. You don’t need to ask first and you don’t need to tie them up somewhere out of the way.

It’s one of the reasons the early crowd is what it is. A lot of people walk up, have a coffee with the dog under the table, and walk back.

Coming with children

Children are welcome, and there’s a menu for them. The room is easy going with a pram, and the entrance is pram friendly, so you’re not wrestling anything up a step.

Nobody minds a bit of noise. Families are a good half of who comes up here in the morning.

The coffee, and what milk you can have

Ann & Elizabeth ran restaurants in Sydney for years before this, and it shows in small ways rather than loud ones. The coffee is made properly, the kitchen runs on time, and nobody is hurried out of a table.

Oat, almond and soy are all available if you don’t want dairy. And the machine doesn’t stop when breakfast does. Coffee, cake and teas are on all day, and on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday they carry on past the kitchen.

Ann & Elizabeth will tell you it’s the best coffee in Harrington. So, for what it’s worth, will a fair number of the people who have written about the place. One regular put it simply: “Always love going there really friendly staff good atmosphere good food great Coffee best in Harrington.”

Getting here and parking

The café is at 41 Josephine Boulevard, Harrington NSW 2427, inside the clubhouse at Harrington Waters Golf Club. There’s parking on site, so you park at the clubhouse and walk straight in.

Getting in is step free. There’s a wheelchair accessible entrance and wheelchair accessible dining areas, and the same easy run works with a pram. Directions and the map are on the contact page.

If breakfast turns into lunch

It often does. At 11:30 the kitchen swaps over and the light meals come on: toasted sandwiches, a chicken caesar wrap, a smoked salmon wrap, a seafood basket, a club sandwich. Bar snacks come on at the same time, so a basket of beer battered fries is $8.50 if you just want something to pick at.

The café is licensed too, so there’s tap and bottled beer, wine and soft drinks alongside the coffee. Plenty of people arrive for breakfast, order a second coffee, and are still there at one o’clock.

The kitchen closes at 2pm. On Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the bar and café stay open until 5:30pm for bar snacks, coffee, cake and drinks, weather permitting, and Friday Happy Hour runs 4 to 5:30pm. Ring ahead if you’re coming for the afternoon: the later session depends on the weather, and a private event at the clubhouse usually closes the café to the public.

The lunch menu, if you stay

Plenty of people mean to have breakfast and end up having lunch. The light meals come on at 11:30 and they’re the easy end of it: a toasted ham, cheese and tomato sandwich is $10.50, chicken, brie, avocado and aioli on toasted Turkish bread is $13.50, and a chicken or ham salad wrap is $13.50.

If you want something more substantial, the lunch list runs a bit further.

• Angus beef burger, $19.50. With fries.
• Club sandwich, $18.50. With fries.
• Chicken caesar wrap, $18.50. With sweet potato fries.
• Smoked salmon wrap, $16.50. With salad.
• Peking duck spring rolls, $21.50. With fries and salad.
• Tempura flathead tails, $23. With fries, salad and dipping sauce.
• Seafood basket, $22. With fries and dipping sauce.
• Tempura tasting plate, $30. Fish pieces, prawns and salt and pepper squid, with fries and dipping sauce.

Bar snacks come on at 11:30 as well, so a basket of beer battered fries is $8.50, sweet potato fries are $10.50, and fish cocktails or potato scallops are $5 for two.

It’s also worth asking about the daily specials when you order. They aren’t printed anywhere.

If the kids are with you

There’s a menu for them from 11:30am. Nuggets and fries is $10 and fish and fries is $10, and that’s the whole list, which is usually the right length for a menu aimed at a seven year old.

The room is easy going with a pram and the entrance is pram friendly, so nothing about getting in is a production. Families are a good part of who comes up here.

Coffee, cake and tea run all day

This is the part people don’t expect from a clubhouse. The coffee machine doesn’t stop when breakfast does. Coffee, a selection of teas and cake from the display cabinet are on from open until close.

The teas run black, green and herbal. There’s chilled orange juice, and because the café is licensed there’s tap and bottled beer, wine by the glass or the bottle, and soft drinks in the fridge.

One local summed the place up in a line: “A beautiful place to have a coffee cake etc lovely people too.”

Takeaway, and ordering ahead

You don’t have to sit down. Takeaway is available, and if you call ahead on (02) 6556 0409 it’ll be ready when you arrive.

That’s worth knowing if you’re heading somewhere with it, or if you’re picking up for a few people at work. Group bookings are fine too. Ring the café and talk to them rather than turning up with fourteen people unannounced.

One other small thing that catches first-timers out: you order at the bar. There’s no table service to wait for, so if you sit down and nothing happens, that’s why.
